Celebrating Family Traditions: Honoring the Past and Creating the New

December 19, 2024 | By: Lisa Mongulla Photography

Every family has its own unique rhythm—small rituals and meaningful moments that keep us connected. Traditions are a way of saying, "This is who we are," whether it’s a celebration passed down for decades or something brand new that reflects the lives we’re living now.

What makes traditions so special isn’t just their longevity but how they grow alongside us, embracing new faces, ideas, and layers of meaning. One of my favorite traditions is proof of that—a journey that started with my grandmother, filled our kitchen with joy, and now connects family and friends in ways I never imagined.

The Tradition That Started It All

Nearly two decades ago, December 23rd became more than just another date on the calendar. It was my grandmother’s birthday, and it also became our family’s baking day. What began as a simple way to celebrate her life quickly became something larger—a yearly event filled with warmth, delicious cookies, and, above all, love.

My grandmother’s sesame seed cookies were always at the center of it all. There’s something magical about carrying on a recipe that has been in the family for generations. But for me, it was about more than just the baking. It was about the stories shared as we worked, the laughter echoing through the kitchen, and the photo of her hands that now means more to me than I can put into words. That single image—her hands dusted with flour, carefully shaping the dough—is a reminder of the love and strength she poured into everything she did.  My grandmother lived to be 101!

From Family to Friends: The Tradition Grows

Traditions often start small, but they rarely stay that way. Over the years, what began as a family-only tradition has blossomed into something much bigger. Friends joined in, and suddenly the kitchen was filled with new faces and fresh energy. It became a beautiful mix of old and new—family recipes alongside cookies found online, familiar laughter mingling with new jokes and stories.

Each year, the baking day grew a little more vibrant. Flour-covered counters turned into flour-covered memories, with everyone pitching in to keep the tradition alive. It wasn’t just about honoring my grandmother anymore; it was about building something bigger, something that could carry her spirit forward in new and wonderful ways.

New Traditions for New Times

As life changes, so do the traditions we hold dear. Sometimes they evolve naturally—like my grandmother’s birthday celebration growing to include friends—or they emerge from entirely new moments. A Sunday morning walk might turn into a weekly ritual. A one-time gathering could become the highlight of every holiday season.

The beauty of traditions is how they adapt to reflect who we are now. They don’t have to stay the same to be meaningful; they just need to be rooted in love, connection, and shared purpose.

Preserving Traditions Through Photography

Some of the most meaningful traditions aren’t elaborate—they’re in the quiet moments that bring us together. A camera can capture the laughter in a bustling kitchen or the stillness of a shared memory, turning fleeting moments into lasting treasures.

Photography has always been a way to celebrate the traditions I hold dear. Whether it’s a candid image of friends baking together or a planned family portrait that marks the years as they pass, photos have the power to tell the story of who we are and what we’ve built together.

Capture Your Own Traditions

Whether your traditions are decades old or just beginning, they deserve to be remembered. Through photography, we can preserve the moments that make your family unique, so they can be cherished for generations to come. Let’s celebrate your family’s story, one memory at a time.
