Recently, I had the privilege of traveling to Scotland, not as a golfer, but as a supporter, photographer, and proud wife. The trip was centered around my husband, Bob Doria, PGA, General Manager and Director of Golf at Medford Village Country Club. Scotland, the birthplace of golf, provided the perfect backdrop for an event that combined passion, tradition, and the thrill of the sport. It was an unforgettable experience, a bucket list trip for many, filled with stunning courses, rich culture, and the opportunity to document the event as a photojournalist.
Supporting Bob and His Passion for Golf
Bob’s career in golf is a source of pride for me, and this trip to Scotland was another way to support him as he connected with fellow golf enthusiasts and explored some of the most prestigious courses in the world. The trip wasn’t just about the game; it was about immersing ourselves in the history of golf while also creating memories that would last a lifetime. My role on this trip was to document the moments—capturing the play, documenting the excitement along with the beauty of Scotland through my lens.
Courses Played: A Golfer’s Dream
Our trip to Scotland took us to some of the most iconic golf courses in the world:
- Crail Golfing Society – A course filled with history and stunning seaside views. Crail Golfing Society was the perfect way to start the adventure.
- St. Andrews Links, Jubilee Course – One of the finest courses in St. Andrews, providing a true test of skill amidst spectacular scenery. Jubilee Course
- St. Andrews Links, Castle Course – A challenging but rewarding course, offering breathtaking views over the North Sea. Castle Course
- Dumbarnie Golf Links – A modern-day classic, Dumbarnie Links offered wide fairways and dramatic vistas.
- Carnoustie Championship Golf Course – Known as one of the most challenging courses in the world, Carnoustie lived up to its legendary status.
- St. Andrews Links, Old Course – The home of golf itself. Walking on the Old Course felt like stepping back in time, where golf's greatest moments have been made.
- Kingsbarns Golf Links – Perhaps one of the most scenic, Kingsbarns offered sweeping coastal views and an unforgettable golfing experience.
Each course had its own unique beauty, challenges, and stories, and watching Bob play on these iconic greens was a true highlight.
Staying in St. Andrews
Our home base for the trip was the charming Greyfriars Hotel, located right in the heart of St. Andrews. The hotel’s cozy atmosphere made it the perfect place to relax after long days on the golf course, and its proximity to everything allowed us to explore the town with ease.
Exploring the Local Gems
Of course, it wasn’t all about golf! When we weren't out on the course, we had the chance to explore some of the local gems St. Andrews has to offer. From delicious meals to authentic experiences, here are a few highlights:
- Jannetta's Gelateria – We enjoyed some of the best gelato I’ve ever had at this local favorite.
- Fisher & Donaldson – This bakery is famous for its Yum Yum donuts, which were a delicious treat.
- Cromars – We couldn’t leave Scotland without indulging in the best fish & chips, and Cromars didn’t disappoint.
- Taste – A lovely coffee shop where I relaxed and recharged.
- Little Italy – We had an unforgettable Italian dinner at this cozy spot.
- Dunvegan's – Near the Old Course, Dunvegan’s is an authentic Scottish bar and restaurant, where we immersed ourselves in the local culture with great food and drink.
Capturing the Trip
While Bob was busy conquering the courses, I took on a different role—documenting the entire trip through photography. As a photographer, I was able to capture the quiet moments of reflection, the camaraderie between players, and the awe-inspiring beauty of Scotland’s landscapes. There’s something incredibly rewarding about photographing these moments, knowing that I’m helping to preserve memories of this special journey.
This trip reminded me of how much I love combining my two passions: supporting Bob in his golf career and creating meaningful work through photography. Just as I do every year with my charitable work for the Food Bank of South Jersey, this was another chance to give back in a different way—by capturing and sharing the essence of the experience.
Looking Ahead
As I reflect on our trip to Scotland, I’m filled with gratitude for the opportunity to support Bob while also immersing myself in a landscape that’s rich with history and beauty. Whether it’s through golf or photography, these moments remind us of the importance of pursuing our passions and standing by each other along the way. I look forward to future adventures, whether at home or abroad, knowing that our journey together is just getting started.
