Yearbook portraits are more than just a school requirement—they’re a snapshot of a moment in time, capturing who your senior is as they close one chapter and begin another. At Lisa Mongulla Photography, I know that some seniors may not feel excited about being in front of the camera, whether due to self-consciousness about their smile, body image concerns, or simply feeling shy. My goal is to empower teens and make sure every senior feels seen, heard, and celebrated for exactly who they are.
Why I Don’t Do “Assembly Line” Photography
If you’ve ever experienced a typical yearbook portrait session at a school “volume studio,” you know it can feel impersonal and rushed. These studios are focused on moving quickly, getting through as many students as possible in a short amount of time. But I take a different approach. For me, each session is about connection—building trust and comfort with the senior and understanding their unique personality and style.
Listening is the Key to Success
One of the things that sets my yearbook portrait sessions apart is the attention I give to both the senior and their parents. It’s not just about showing up and snapping a picture. Before the camera even comes out, I spend time talking with both the senior and their parents to understand any concerns and what each of them envisions for the session. Some seniors may feel nervous about their appearance, but by focusing on what makes them feel comfortable, we create a plan that brings out the best in them.
Moms and dads often want a timeless portrait of their child, while seniors might want something that reflects their individuality. I take the time to listen to everyone involved and find a balance that feels right for both. That personal connection is key to creating portraits that everyone loves.
Turning Anxiety Into Confidence
It’s not uncommon for a senior to walk into a session unsure about how they’ll look in their portraits. I’ve worked with many students who dislike their smile, are worried about body image, or simply don’t like being the center of attention. I understand that these concerns are real, and my job is to make sure the experience is uplifting, not stressful. By talking them through the process and creating a relaxed environment, we build confidence together.
For example, I’ve had seniors tell me after a session that they never thought they’d like a photo of themselves—and then they leave with a smile, excited about what we captured. That’s the moment I strive for in every session: not just creating a beautiful portrait, but helping the senior feel empowered and proud of who they are.
Capturing Their True Personality
At Lisa Mongulla Photography, yearbook portraits aren’t about cookie-cutter poses. Each senior brings their own personality to the session, and it’s my job to reflect that in a way that feels authentic. Whether it’s through a genuine smile, a look that says confidence, or a thoughtful expression, we work together to create portraits that empower teens to feel true to who they are.
My goal is for seniors to see their portrait and think, “That’s me.” And for their parents to see it and feel a wave of pride. It’s this personalized, thoughtful approach that makes a yearbook portrait session with me so much more than just another school photo.
