make your memories
Spring Has Sprung!
Thank goodness, spring has sprung and places are finally opening back up again. It’s been hard being "stuck" inside with our families. Restriction capacities in school aren't all that great either. Not to mention the difficulty searching for colleges and applying to higher education when some of the bigger colleges aren’t even open, let alone giving tours to potential new students. It makes it hard to know where you want to go, especially if you never got a chance to dive deep into the college search before COVID.
But warm weather means college visits can actually happen. Whether that means touring around outside or popping a masked head into a dorm room, this experience is vital to moving out of high school and into college. Given, you may not get a chance to eat in the cafeteria, you will finally get that experience of stepping onto a college campus and imagining yourself there in the future.
Intimidated?
To juniors or sophomores beginning your search, don’t feel intimidated. There is so much anxiety that can go into college applications and choosing the right school for you. Try to make those reservations and go visit the universities you may be interested in. You may love one school on paper and not so much another; but those visits can completely change your perspective when you see the campus, experience the student body, and talk to potential classmates and professors.
Are You a Current Senior?
For seniors who are about to graduate, I get it, you’ve already put down your deposits and made your commitments. Some of you may be lucky enough to get an in-person orientation maybe at Kean University, Ramapo College, Towson, and other smaller universities. Even though the large schools, like Rutgers and Temple, have a virtual orientation, it is still possible to tour their campuses and get a feel of where you’ll be living (or commuting to) next year. Once you’re there, the entire transition will feel real.
Don't Forget the Swag!
While you’re visiting, buy your sweatshirts! Take your pictures! Enjoy the time you get to step on campus for the first time ever (or the first time in a while). And when you get home, make sure to spend time with your friends and make the most of the last few months before you go away.
Using the gear you get during your college visits, book a session to take your first college photos. Even better, do it with your group of friends. The reality of heading off into different directions may be setting in. Take some time to make these memories with your high school friends from Rancocas Valley, Camden Catholic, Lenape, Shamong and other schools in the Burlington and Camden County area while you’re all home. No matter what, you’ll have these photos to remember your bond — and it’s always so fun to look back and see how you and your friends have changed throughout the years.
